What Pattern Extractor does to a surface photo

When you photograph a printed shirt, a vintage textile, a rug or a ceramic tile in the real world, the pattern is warped by fabric drape, camera angle and shadows. Cropping the photo only gives you a wrinkled patch. Pattern Extractor reads the underlying motif and repeat layout across the surface, flattens out the folds and perspective tilt, neutralizes uneven lighting, and returns a clean, front-facing pattern swatch:

· Drape flattened: Reconstructs motifs hidden inside pleats, sleeves, and cushions.

· Even lighting: Neutralizes studio glare, crease shadows, and warm room casts.

· Clean repeat: Restores floral, geometric, and plaid spacing into a flat swatch.

What changes when you extract a pattern instead of cropping

Built for textile, fashion and surface designers working from real-world reference photos.

Pattern Extractor — key features 02
Orthographic

Wrinkles, drape and perspective removed

Straightens patterns photographed on curved sleeves, folded fabric swatches, upholstered furniture or angled walls so the motif sits flat on a 2D plane.

Pattern Extractor — key features 03
Delit

Shadows and studio glare neutralized

Strips away crease shadows, specular highlights and warm/cool room lighting casts so the background ground color and motif palette stay uniform across the swatch.

Pattern Extractor — key features 04
Repeat-ready

Motif geometry and repeat layout preserved

Reconstructs floral prints, geometric tiles, stripes, plaids and jacquard weaves with clean edges and consistent spacing ready for moodboards, CAD re-coloring or 3D material mapping.

Pattern Extractor vs. Cropping a Photo by Hand

What happens when you extract the underlying design instead of just cutting a square out of a photograph.

Cropping a Photo in an Image Editor

  • Fabric folds and garment seams warp the spacing of stripes, checks and florals
  • Crease shadows create dark bands when you try to tile or repeat the swatch
  • Camera perspective makes motifs at the top of the frame smaller than at the bottom
  • Manual clone-stamping and perspective warping in Photoshop takes hours per print

Virse Pattern Extractor

  • Unwraps fabric drape and perspective tilt into a front-facing, orthographic swatch
  • Removes fold shadows and uneven lighting so ground and motif colors stay consistent
  • Preserves original motif proportions and repeat structure across the entire square
  • Ready to drop into apparel tech packs, digital moodboards or 3D material libraries

How to extract a pattern from a photo in four steps

  1. Upload the fabric or surface photo

Drop in a clear photo of the garment, textile swatch, wallpaper, rug or patterned object. Include at least one full repeat of the motif in the frame.

  2. Note the pattern type or colors (optional)

If the photo was taken under strong colored lighting or has a complex weave, add a short note describing the ground color or motif style.

  3. Extract the flat pattern swatch

Run the tool on the Virse canvas to remove wrinkles, perspective distortion and shadows while restoring the flat 2D pattern layout.

  4. Apply, recolor or export

Download the flat swatch for your spec sheet, or chain it directly into Virse's Material Transfer or Illustration Color Variants tools on the same canvas.

Copy-Ready Notes for Extracting Complex Surface Prints

While Pattern Extractor reads most textiles automatically, adding a short note helps lock ground colours and repeat geometry when your reference photo was shot under harsh indoor lighting or heavy drape:

· Woven tartan or plaid shirt: Flatten sleeve folds, preserve perpendicular twill check alignment, navy and hunter green ground.

· Vintage floral dress print: Remove waist gathers and warm tungsten cast, restore flat cream ground with botanical motifs.

· Hand-painted ceramic tile: Correct angled camera perspective, strip gloss specular glare, keep cobalt blue geometry sharp.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of photos work best with Pattern Extractor?
Photos that show at least one to two complete repeats of the motif under reasonably clear focus work best. Avoid extreme motion blur or heavy occlusion where part of the motif is completely hidden behind another object.
Does it remove fabric wrinkles and shadow gradients?
Yes. Unlike a simple crop, Pattern Extractor flattens out garment folds, drape distortion and crease shadows so the background color and motif lines are even across the swatch.
How is Pattern Extractor different from Pattern Generator?
Pattern Generator creates a brand-new seamless pattern from a text prompt or motif idea. Pattern Extractor starts from a real photograph of an existing fabric, garment or object and reconstructs its surface pattern as a flat 2D swatch.
Can I apply the extracted pattern onto another garment or product?
Yes. Once the flat swatch is on your Virse canvas, you can pass it into Material Transfer, Virtual Fitting Room or AI Clothes Design Generator to preview the print on a new silhouette.
Can I generate new colorways from the extracted swatch?
Yes. Send the extracted swatch into Illustration Color Variants or Color Grade Transfer on the same canvas to explore seasonal palette variations while keeping the motif geometry locked.
Is Virse's Pattern Extractor free to try?
Yes. New accounts receive 200 free credits plus 50 daily refill credits (when your balance is below 200), so you can extract flat swatches from your own fabric photos right away.
